{"id":15,"date":"2023-08-08T15:22:07","date_gmt":"2023-08-08T14:22:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/picardysheepdog.co.uk\/?page_id=15"},"modified":"2023-08-14T20:18:15","modified_gmt":"2023-08-14T19:18:15","slug":"about-the-breed","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/picardysheepdog.co.uk\/?page_id=15","title":{"rendered":"About the breed"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading alignwide\" id=\"we-re-a-studio-in-berlin-with-an-international-practice-in-architecture-urban-planning-and-interior-design-we-believe-in-sharing-knowledge-and-promoting-dialogue-to-increase-the-creative-potential-of-collaboration\" style=\"font-size:48px;line-height:1.1\">The Picardy Sheepdog<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Thought to be the oldest of the French Sheepdogs,&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>the Picardy Sheepdog also known as the Berger Picard was&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>brought to northern France and the Pas de Calais, in the&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>9th century by the Franks.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/picardy-sheepdog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/61.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"269\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Some experts insist that this breed is related to the more&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>well-know<\/strong><strong>n Briard &amp; Beauceron, while others believe it&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>shares a common origin with Dutch and Belgian Shepherds.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Although the Picardy Sheepdog made an appearance at&nbsp;the first French dog show in 1863, the breed\u2019s rustic&nbsp;appearance did not lead to popularity as a show dog.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The breeding stock of the Picardy Sheepdog, was decimated&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>by the ravages of World War I and World War II. With its population concentrated on the farms of north-eastern France, trench warfare in the Somme reduced the breed to near extinction.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Picards easy care and mellow, yet mischievous, temperament have started the breed back on the road to recovery. Nevertheless its numbers are still limited, even in its native country.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>T<\/strong><strong>oday in France there are approximately 3500 dogs and in Germany approximately 500 of this breed. Coat will mat if neglected<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Exercise: Anything from a half hour daily walk to a whole day out hiking, they are highly adaptable.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Training: Easy with correct handling and motivation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Temperament: Good with children, dogs and cats if socialised correctly.
